Nenagh councillors not giving up just yet on saving town council

The stance by the Association of Municipal Authorities of Ireland regarding the abolition of town councils has been defended by its representative on Nenagh Town Council. Cllr Tom Moylan told councillors that the AMAI came out with a document on local government reform four years ago when the idea was mooted by then Minister for the Environment, John Gormley, but that document had not been taken on board by the present Government.

There is a “horror story a day” coming out of the Mid-Western Regional Hospital, according to Nenagh councillor Seamus Morris. The Sinn Fein representative made the statement when he tabled a motion of no confidence in the HSE West and an area committee meeting, claiming the Mid-West had a “dysfunctional hospital system”.

Tipperary economy faces €24.5m hit from fodder crisis

The fodder crisis that has hit Tipperary farmers could cost the local economy approximately €24.5m, according to local farm leader Pat McCormack. The Lisheen-based deputy president of the ICMSA told the Tipperary Star that the full impact of the last year was only now becoming apparent and its effects will go well into next year and very likely into 2015 and beyond.

HSE defends closure of Nenagh Hospital lab

The HSE has defended its decision to close the laboratory at Nenagh Hospital on the grounds that it is “not sustainable as a stand alone facility”. The lab is due to close this July with 12 staff and all the equipment transferring to the Mid-Western Regional Hospital in Limerick.

Tipperary Fine Gael TD Noel Coonan has welcomed the Higgins’ Report on the Establishment of Hospital Groups and the Small Hospital Framework which was approved by Cabinet last week. The local Fine Gael Deputy said the report brings certainty to the future of Nenagh General Hospital and South Tipperary General Hospital.

Kelly Announces €1.7m Road Funding

Public & Commuter Transport Minister and local TD, Alan Kelly, has announced the provision for €1.7 million worth of road maintenance funding for Tipperary. The funding is part of the first ever national ‘Community Involvement Scheme’ which will see residents work with local authority personnel to ensure drainage and resurfacing works are carried out on rural isolated roads.
